Project Info

Greetings, everyone!

Welcome to your oh-so-anticipated end-of-the-semester project. For this project, you will need to research a topic related to South African history, literature, music, or art to create a blog entry of 500 - 750 words. Each student will submit their blog entry by 11 PM, Thursday, December 19th. Comments are due by the start on your class on Friday. On Friday we will have a symposium of sorts to discuss what we all have learned. As part of this project, you will all become familiar with the Blogger platform.

The Blog Entry
A successful blog entry should answer the following questions:

  • Who (or what) is your topic about? Think about the 5 W's + H: Who, what, when, where, why, and how.
  • How was this person/event influential to South Africa and apartheid? Explain its importance.
  • What are your personal reactions to and opinions of this topic?
  • What are your recommendations for further reading/study of this person/topic? For example, if you researched a South African Artist, what works of art would you recommend us to view?

Each blog entry should also include 1 piece of media related to the topic. Possibilities include: photograph(s), video, music, etc.

Finally, your blog post should conclude with a bibliography using MLA format. You need to consult at least 2 different sources. I suggest using a cite such as EasyBib that can assist you with correct formatting.

Peer Feedback (Comments)
In addition to your blog entry, you will be expected to read and comment on the two blog posts following your own. If you happen to be the last or second-to-last post, you would return to the beginning of the feed to continue reading. A successful comment should be between 100 - 200 words and respond to the following questions:

  • What is your reaction to this topic? Give your thoughts and opinions. Note: Here you are responding to the content of the blog, not the author's writing.
  • Name 2 things the author did well and 1 thing the author can improve upon with regards to their writing.
  • What is one further question you have about this topic?

Good luck and enjoy exploring your topic!
Ms. Baker & Ms. Windham

A Note on Acceptable Sources
Please note that wikipedia is NOT an acceptable source for this topic. HOWEVER, it can be used effectively to give you an intro-level understanding of what you are researching. Citations within Wikipedia (found at the bottom of every page) can also direct you to original sources. Websites ending in .edu or .gov generally have the most reliable information.

Remember Your Due Dates

  • 11 PM, Thursday, December 19th: All blog entries must be posted.
  • The start of your class (A1 or A2) on Friday, December 20th: All comments must be posted.
